From 1964 to 1991 this city was called Shevchenko. The current name Caspian Sea is probably because of the city's cliffs that overlook the Caspian sea. Now as mentioned above Aktau is unique for its Block address system. Generally an address here consists of 3 numbers. One for district number, one for building number and one for Apartment number. This address system is in place because the city was originally planned as camps for the Oil industry workers.

Aktau is also Kazakhstan's main sea port.Aktau in ancient times was on route of Silk road and saw founding of many Sufi shrines near and around Aktau city. Aktau today is a city of approximately 200,000 citizens located on the banks of the Caspian sea  in Kazakhstan, Central Asia.
